Oil change
What it is and why it matters
Engine oil lubricates, cools, and cleans hundreds of moving parts. It breaks down with heat and miles; run it too long and you get accelerated wear, sludge, and in the worst case a seized engine. A fresh oil-and-filter change is the cheapest insurance your engine will ever get.
DIY vs. shop
$25–50 in oil + filter, 30–45 min, beginner-friendly with a jack and a drain pan.
$40–100 at most quick-lube and independent shops.
Costs are rough US ballparks and vary by vehicle, parts, and region.
Good to know
5,000 mi or 6 months is a safe default; full-synthetic oil and newer engines often go longer. Your owner’s manual is the final word — but whichever comes first, log it so the pattern is visible at resale.
Log it in MyGlovebox.
Snap the receipt (or record your own work) and it lands on your car’s timeline — with a reminder set for next time.
